The Nagaraja and Nagi Sculpture | Ajanta Cave 19

Medium: Oil | Size: 36” x 48” inch

The rock-cut sculpture of the Nagaraja (Serpent King) and his consort, the Nagi, is a masterpiece at the entrance of Cave 19 in the Ajanta Caves. Carved in high relief, the Nagaraja sits in royal ease, covered by a seven-hooded cobra canopy. The Nagi sits beside him under a single hood. Rich adornments detail their regal status. They protect the prayer hall and stand for water, fertility, and local beliefs joined with Buddhist faith.
